A Severe Case of Tooth Decay Might Call for Treatment by a Bridge

Posted .

When you allow a cavity to go untreated by Dr. Behnam Y. Moghadasian at his Great Neck, New York practice, the bacterial presence will gradually escalate. As the tooth is increasingly compromised by tooth decay, it can severely fracture near the gum line or cause an infectious abscess to form deep in the gums.

When a tooth is this severely distressed, Dr. Behnam Y. Moghadasian might be able to treat it with a root canal followed by a crown restoration. However, if the damage to the tooth is severe, or the infection in the gums is large, he might advocate a total extraction. After any infected material has been removed, our dentist will suture your gums and provide you with a prescription for pain medication or antibiotics.

After your gums have healed, Dr. Behnam Y. Moghadasian will help you understand your dental restoration options. One of the more effective and popular options is to have a bridge restoration. This involves forming two abutments out of the two closest teeth. To do this he removes the tooth enamel layer from each tooth. Then he will cast an impression of the area.  This will be sent to a dental lab where your new bridge is created. He will then secure a temporary crown over each of the abutments. This will keep each abutment safely protected while the lab is busy producing your permanent bridge.

Once it’s ready, we will call you back in to cement the bridge into place with a strong dental adhesive. With good oral hygiene measures, you can expect the newly restored tooth to last for a very long time.
